Stonewall Dems to gather in Cleveland this fall
by Patrick Shepherd
Cleveland-Founded last year as an affiliate of the National Stonewall Democrats, the Cleveland Stonewall Democrats works through the Democratic Party to advance the rights of all people, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity.
Over the course of the past three decades, the Democratic Party has increasingly become the home for those devoted to securing fair treatment for gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender people. At the national level, the platforms of the two major parties diverge as sharply on this issue as on any other. In fact, the last several Democratic national platforms have strongly opposed prejudice against GLBT people, and have explicitly supported the adoption of national policies to outlaw discrimination of various sorts.
Subsequently, the mission of the Cleveland Stonewall Democrats is two-fold: Elect pro-GLBT Democrats to public office; and advocate on behalf of GLBT issues at all levels of the Democratic Party.
During the 2000 election cycle, our group mustered nearly 250 volunteers to work for Al Gore, Joe Lieberman and the Cuyahoga County Democratic Coordinated Campaign.
Our unprecedented visibility was enhanced by the fact that we hired two consultants to work at both area campaign offices on a fulltime basis. Cleveland Stonewall Democrats volunteers engaged in thousands of hours of fundamental political campaign work to support pro-LGBT Democrats.
The National Stonewall Democrats (www.stonewalldemocrats.org) will be holding its annual convention in Cleveland between September 13 and 16, 2001. Representatives from 60 affiliates and many of the 10,000 members will be attending this con-
vention with Reps. Barney Frank and Tammy Baldwin and many other GLBT Democratic elected officials.
This convention will be a strategic planning session for mobilizing the grassroots to return Congress to Democratic control in 2002: furthermore, it will be packed with workshops, media training, campaign development, dynamic speakers, and fun social
events.
Locally in 2001, the Cleveland Stonewall Democrats will make endorsements for many municipal campaigns in Cuyahoga County, will co-sponsor candidate forums in a few cities and also hope to expand our work throughout northeast Ohio as we prepare for the 2002 statewide and Congressional elections.
All meetings are free and open to the public. They are scheduled at 6:30 p.m. at the Cleveland Lesbian-Gay Center of, 6600 Detroit Ave. Meeting dates are Monday, August 6; Monday, September 10; Monday, October 15; and, Monday, December 3.
